Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Training

Vascular Surgery Operating Room

A message from Program Director Dr. Enjae Jung

On behalf of the vascular surgery faculty and trainees, I'd like to welcome you to the OHSU Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship and Integrated Residency Programs. Our programs offer a wide breadth of experience in complex endovascular aortic procedures and lower extremity interventions as well as complex open operations, including aortic surgeries, mesenteric bypasses, and leg revascularizations. Our trainees also participate in a variety of combined surgeries with various other sub-specialists to provide anterior spine exposures, porto-mesenteric or caval reconstructions, and arterial reconstructions for oncologic resections. Research participation is expected and supported with several research coordinators and funding which allow for ample opportunity to present at regional or national meetings and produce peer-reviewed publications during training regardless of the training (0+5 or 5+2) track. Thank you for your interest in our program, and please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Vascular & Endovascular Residency Training Program at Oregon Health & Science University is to develop outstanding vascular surgeons with the knowledge and skills to build productive and fulfilling careers as clinicians, educators, and researchers. We strive to provide this training in a diverse, inclusive, and collegial educational environment where trainee well-being and professional development are among our utmost priorities and in alignment with the University's triple aim of healing, teaching, and discovery.

Program Aims:

  1. Provide a broad experience in both the hospital and outpatient setting to train residents for autonomous practice in either community or academic positions.
  2. Teach the methods of hypothesis driven clinical research and educate the next generation of surgeon educators and surgeon scientists.
  3. Prepare graduates for today's and tomorrow's changing clinical practice, technical skills, and healthcare environment by demonstrating the clinical knowledge, data driven clinical decision making, and leadership skills required to care for the breadth of vascular surgical pathologies and perform wide range of open and endovascular procedures.
  4. Cultivate a diverse and inclusive educational environment that is respectful to all.

Integrated residency and how to apply

The OHSU Integrated Vascular Residency is a 0 + 5 residency resulting in board eligibility for a primary certificate in Vascular Surgery.  The program received accreditation from ACGME in 2022 and we are participating in ERAS to recruit one PGY-1 position to start July 2025. OHSU has a long established vascular surgery fellowship program and one of the largest general surgery residencies in the U.S.  OHSU vascular faculty have served as faculty for both the fellowship and the general surgery residency and are skilled in teaching learners at all levels of education. Our program offers experience in complex endovascular aortic procedures and lower extremity interventions as well as complex open operations including aortic reconstructions, mesenteric bypasses, and lower extremity bypasses.  Our trainees also participate in a wide variety of combined surgeries with various other sub-specialists to provide anterior spine exposures, porto-mesenteric or caval reconstructions, and arterial reconstruction for oncologic resections. Research is built into the 5 year training experience, and there is an expectation to present at regional and/or national meetings and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

Integrated residency application requirements:

All applicants for the PGY-1 position must register with the NRMP match to be considered. Applications and all supporting material should be entered on the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) sponsored by the AAMC. ERAS application requirements are as follows:

Fellowship and how to apply

Our two-year fellowship provides exceptional training for accomplished surgeons in the specialized field of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in both academic and private practices. The curriculum is structured in an integrated fashion, with both first and second-year fellows rotating on clinical services at the University Hospital, Portland VA Medical Center, and Legacy Emanuel Hospital. All three sites provide the full spectrum of open and endovascular surgery. Our trainees participate in complex endovascular aortic procedures and lower extremity interventions as well as complex open operations including aortic surgeries, mesenteric bypasses, and leg bypasses.  Our fellows also participate in a wide variety of combined surgeries with various other sub-specialists to provide anterior spine exposures, porto-mesenteric or caval reconstructions, and arterial reconstruction for oncologic resections. Research is encouraged, and there is ample opportunity to present at regional and national meetings and produce peer-reviewed publications during both years.
